Mio NONAKA Student of Meiji University, Japan My purpose for studying abroad is to participate in a seminar and deepen my knowledge in my chosen field of study. The topic of the seminar is second language acquisition. Many of the Australians I have met are bilingual or trilingual, owing to their different cultural backgrounds. In this sense, I believe I made the right choice to go to Australia because my many experiences in this multi-lingual environment stimulated my academic interest. The makeup of people from different racial, linguistic and religious backgrounds varies from city to city. Depending on the location, sometimes employment opportunities are limited. I learned that because of the factors relating to culture and geography, economic and social inequality is widening in some Australian societies. By immersing in Australia's multi-cultures, I was able to broaden my range of interests beyond linguistics. Although I had struggles with the language as well as cultural differences, I will continue to work hard so as to take full advantage of my remaining days in Australia.
