Sophie PORTER Student of Curtin University, Australia Shanghai is beautiful, and breathtaking. My name is Sophie Porter, originally from Curtin University located in Western Australia. I am studying for a double degree in Commerce (Marketing) and Arts (Chinese). I am currently situated as a General Advanced Student majoring in Translation and Interpretation at Fudan University in Shanghai, China – and wow, it is incredible. It is a defining moment. In Western Australia we were told time and time again of the importance of ties between Asia and Australia – it was not until this experience that I realised just how advanced and amazing China is. This experience in China has allowed me to go beyond the theory of language in providing the perfect platform to practise, and incorporate the language alongside Chinese culture. The conversations that take place here among people from different backgrounds – other foreign exchange students, Fudan University students and the locals are incredibly interesting. Topics such as societal, historical and political matters are exchanged here, which is something unattainable in the current context of Australia. As this trip goes on, I would like to stress just how at home my heart feels. It is chaotic – but it is at the same time magical. The greatness of a city such as Shanghai, and the experience of exchange is like no other. This semester abroad has provided me with a taste of my future, and the future.
