Alexandra LIU Student of Monash University, Australia In September 2015 I undertook a semester abroad in a city I otherwise would not have the opportunity to live in: Hong Kong. I lived in a student dorm with picturesque views over the Sai Kung coast, on campus at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) - one of the most prestigious universities in East Asia. My experiences in Hong Kong provided me with memories and valuable life skills I would not have imagined, and friendships I will continue cherish. The city itself never had a dull moment. Lined with street vendors and dazzling lights, the convenience of Hong Kong is exemplary of the city's fast-paced lifestyle. And yet, lush greenery and mountainous coastlines are abundant for those moments when you need to escape from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life. Culturally, Hong Kong is a multiethnic hotpot. I had the privilege of meeting not only local Hong Kongers, but also students from Mainland China and across the globe. My roommate was a Shanghainese exchange student who was more than happy to teach me about Chinese history, basic Mandarin phrases, and even took me on a tour to her hometown during our mid-term break. I am sure the friendships I have formed during my exchange opportunity will last with me forever.
