NG Tsz Yan, Kat Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong I would like to share with you two stories about attitudes: One day, my friend and I were walking down the street. All of a sudden, a large puddle of bird droppings landed on her forehead. I was very concerned, but to my surprise, her first reaction was to say “Wow! How lucky I am today!” I was extremely impressed by her positive attitude! When I helped her clean up, I noticed that she did not seem to be bothered by the accident. I asked her repeatedly whether she wanted to clean up in the toilet, but she refused. We continued our trip and had lots of fun for the rest of the day. I deeply believe that she would become a great person in the future! The other story is that: I met a friend in Australia, he gave my friend and I a bad impression when we first met him. However, we found out later that he was actually a nice guy. When we told him about what we originally thought of him, it appeared that he wasn’t worried by what we said at all. This friend had allowed me to understand that we should not worry about what others think of us. As long as we are confident and stay true to ourselves, the truth would eventually be revealed. If you know that you are doing the right things, then you should not worry about other people’s judgment. It’s futile to teach someone to be afraid, so as to prevent them from getting hurt; it’s better to teach them ways to face the world with braveness, and empower them with the strength that they have always possessed, even when it’s different from what the society thinks. Through this exchange experience, I have learnt to become more self assertive and self reliant. It is these kinds of experiences and knowledge that are priceless.
