Lily JIN The University of Sydney, Australia I am extremely grateful for my Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong scholarship award. Besides easing the financial burden of exchange studies, receiving this scholarship has made a difference in giving me a general feeling of being wanted. It offered me a multitude of remarkable experiences and added new dimensions to my economic and finance studies. The exchange program also allowed me to improve my understanding of other cultures and my interpersonal communication skills. I could not have asked for a more amazing journey. The chance to study in Beijing allowed me an insight into Chinese culture. Through my exchange experience at Tsinghua University, I was taught other ways of learning my subject - finance and economic studies – which was different to how I was taught in Australia. My exchange studies also led me towards a greater understanding of the increasingly important global topics of Chinese economic environment and market conditions. The skills and knowledge I obtained from my exchange studies have and will continue to benefit my future tremendously. Living in Beijing for the semester gave me the opportunity to travel around this wonderful city which was filled with historical architectures. The visits to the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Great Wall gave me the chance to learn about ancient China and its culture. I was very impressed by the breathtaking natural beauty of the city when I took a walk in the parks or when I went hiking in Xiangshan. I tried out different winter outdoor activities such as ice skating on a frozen lake, which is rare for someone from Sydney, a city that never snows. I like the traditional Chinese food in Beijing and the many themed restaurants. And of course I made many wonderful friends while on exchange, not only with the local students in Beijing but also students from all around the world who participated in the exchange programme. My exchange experience has improved my inter-cultural social skills, provided me with a global perspective and a greater depth of cultural understanding. I believe China is a country with great potential for economic growth and investment opportunities, and I would very much like to have a future career there.
