Hing Kai Chan The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
The Award has not only allowed me to conduct part of my research in Australia, but to work with people from another lifestyle. Staff and students at the university were all helpful. It was my fortune that I met a postgraduate student who helped me find very good accommodation upon my arrival in Adelaide. He certainly made my life in Australia easier. More importantly, I was able meet friends from different parts of the world, from a wide variety of cultures. This experience helped me to polish my cultural awareness. It is not surprising that Adelaide was a city I found very quiet, as compared with Hong Kong. However, I felt that the people in the city were all kind-hearted. I can still remember how a generous lady, who was in a hurry for a meeting early one morning, helped me to find an office together for half an hour. This is something that I have not experienced in Hong Kong. I will remember every person I met in Adelaide, including the bus driver who took me from my home to the school every weekday. Finally, I would like to thank DEST and Cheung Kong for their great efforts in regard to this Award. Without their assistance, I would have been in trouble during the period I stayed in Australia. I hope that the Awards can become a tradition and more students can benefit from exchange experiences.
