Man Fu Lam, Ronald Victor The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong This exchange year was definitely one of the highlights in my life that I am so proud of. Given such a golden opportunity to experience things that I could never have done in Hong Kong, I have to thank my parents and the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Scholarship Programme for their support and encouragement. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see how diverse the world actually is. During the exchange period, I met friends from all around the world. Some of them were exchange students like me and some of them were locals. Getting involved in such a multi-cultural atmosphere not only enhanced my understanding of other cultures, but also led to greater appreciation of my own culture. It was really interesting to see how different cultures view issues from different perspectives. Now I have got connections all around the world, from France to Germany, Japan to Korea, Malaysia to China, and of course local Australians. I reckon that the best part of this exchange year was the pursuit of my dreams to fly. I discovered the fascinating world of aviation and can definitely say that this was my ‘year of aviation’. At University, I took courses related to aerospace engineering and learnt about the technical aspects of aircrafts and spacecrafts. After school I did private flying, learning about flight theories and getting handson pilot’s experience. I still remember the day that I had my first solo flight, it was so unforgettable! You really felt that life was in your own hands – there was no one to correct or help you and a slight mistake could lead to unexpected consequences. Flying is not easy at all, it is something which requires knowledge, as well as absolute concentration and self-discipline. Through flying I’ve learned a lot more about self-discipline, pressure control and judgment skills, which also benefit my everyday life. Now I have my pilot’s license and I am more certain on what I want to be in the future. I have found my ‘landing field’.
