Andrew Beck University of South Australia, Australia From March to August 2005, I visited Professor Li Ping at the City University, Hong Kong as part of the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Award. My time in Hong Kong was outstanding, both personally and professionally. Firstly, it was a privilege to work closely with Prof. Li in our common areas of interest, namely low complexity receiver structures for multiple access communications systems. Prof Li and his students have made many important contributions to the field and given that we are interested in different aspects of the same problem, I feel that we mutually benefited from the exchange. In particular I was investigating detection and synchronisation techniques applicable to a specific set of channel codes invented by Prof Li. Having returned to Australia, it is now my intention to publish a conference paper concerning these developments. Furthermore, it is anticipated that this work will form an important part of my PhD thesis. In addition to furthering my research interests, the opportunity to live in Hong Kong was immensely rewarding at a personal level. Hong Kong is a vibrant international city with a rich and diverse culture. Whilst living there, I was also able to make many new friends through a range of sporting and social activities. Following my return to Australia, Prof Li visited Adelaide while attending the ISIT’05 conference. I will also be visiting the City University for several days in late 2006 en route to Europe. These visits should allow ample opportunity to follow up research pursued whilst I was in Hong Kong. Having had such a positive experience as part of the Cheung Kong Endeavour Australia award, I encouraged all of Prof Li’s students to apply in 2006. I am hoping that one or more of them may be able to come to the University of South Australia should they be successful.
